The first time ball outside the British Empire was erected by the Dutch in Batavia in 1839. The only time signals listed by the Admiralty in 1880 were disc signals in at Fourth Point, Batavia and Surabaya, all in Java. A time ball at Makassa was established in 1915. A time ball at Rangoon in Burma was announced in 1893 and changed to a light signal in 1931. Time guns were also used at Rangoon and Moulmein. Singapore used an extraordinary range of time signals, starting in 1893 with two time balls, followed by a gun and time bells. A multi-armed signal was added in 1930 plus time lights in 1931. Time signals in Indo-China (now Vietnam) were first at Haiphong in 1883 and then Saigon from 1908. A signal in the Philippines was established in 1885 and continued after the Spanish-American war of 1898 with addition of other signals.
