Concept Formation

In the present chapter, concept formation, an essential topic for modeling various linguistic faculties, is described within the novel connectionist framework of kernel memory, as explained in the previous chapter, as well as the interactive processes among the modules within the artificial mind system. The description proceeds by examining several examples of kernel memory representation for the concept formation. The description reveals that concept formation involves both the nonsymbolic (i.e., sensorimotor) and symbolic counterparts of data processing relevant to a particular concept and, therefore, exploiting the virtue of kernel memory representation embodying such data processing is crucial, and it is hence said that the model represented by kernel memory is essentially symbolically grounded.
