Language Policy in Uganda

In Uganda many nationalities are in competition for limited resources, and that might be one of the reasons the government appears to be eschewing the reality of the linguistic situation, its complexity, and the special considerations and handling it requires. Notwithstanding these misgivings, language savvy scholars continue to examine the language policy in the country, highlighting the developments, dilemmas, and challenges that characterize it. Pertinent issues considered include whether Uganda subscribes to any language planning tenets, or whether there has been any paradigm shift in language policy management in Uganda since independence. To address the specified issues, a series of policy formulations or pronouncements are analyzed and the ensuing implementation gaps highlighted. The situation of the competing nationalities is best established through a survey of domains of language use. For the way forward, some possible solutions are offered.
