Linguistic Policy and Practices in Niger

The chapter investigates language policy in Niger from the colonial era to contemporary era. The aim of the chapter is to analyze the linguistic situation in Niger, and to show how it has evolved. The chapter draws data from interviews, observations, and document analysis. It examines the history of a colonial legacy and its impact on language policy, indigenous and ex-colonial language. The chapter concludes with recommendations of linguistic reforms in search of a strategy for integrating languages into children's schooling and defining the status of national languages.
