摘要

This chapter introduces the reader to the origin of marginalization and devaluation of African languages in African language policies. This marginalization and devaluation go back to the division of Africa by the European powers in 1884–1885 in Berlin, Germany. Since the colonial era, European languages have played official roles in the society while African indigenous languages are relegated to unofficial roles. The chapter ends by outlining the structure of the book.
