Resilience and Equity in Crisis: Rethinking India’s Food Security Strategies in the Era of COVID-19 and Beyond
摘要
Food insecurity is a pervasive challenge in India, with a significant impact on vulnerable groups. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this challenge, highlighting the need for a resilient food system. This chapter provides a comprehensive examination of the multifaceted challenges associated with food insecurity in India, with a specific focus on the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant insights for constructing a robust food system. It systematically elucidates the ramifications of the pandemic and subsequent lockdown on food security among vulnerable populations, specifically examining the experiences of women, tribal communities, caste groups, and migrants. Additionally, the analysis discerns distinctions between urban and rural areas to comprehensively capture the nuanced impact on diverse demographic segments. The analysis extends to a thorough evaluation of the inherent obstacles in the formulation and implementation of strategies, emphasizing issues of food accessibility, affordability, and utilization. A critical examination of policy responses to food insecurity during the pandemic reveals existing gaps within India’s food system. These identified gaps become pivotal focal points for developing a resilient food system capable of seamless operation even in times of unforeseen shocks. Ultimately, the chapter underscores the imperative of crafting policies that not only enhance food security but also lay the foundation for a robust food system adept at absorbing shocks and effectively addressing the prevalent food security discrepancies within the country.
