Modulated Vermibiotechnology for the Management of Solid Waste

Nowadays, unmanaged solid waste pose a major ecological threat. The waste generation rate due to rapid industrialization, demographic change and urbanization add huge quantity of waste into the environment. Huge amount of waste are disposed-off into landfills without prior treatment. Huge efforts have been put worldwide to sort a better technology for management and generation of revenue from wastes. The investment costs for waste treatment techniques such as gasification, pyrolysis and incineration are very high. Composting and vermicomposting are two methods of treating solid organic waste that are considered sustainable and profitable. Unfortunately, pollutants such as heavy metals are often found in trash, which are harmful to the bacteria that break down the waste. Due to its simplicity, biodegradability, high efficacy, portability, and environmental friendliness, vermicompost is an incredible asset for farmers. In light of the fact that arable land currently needs to be fertilized with biomaterials, vermi biotechnology is an appropriate strategy for sustainable development. The main objective of this book chapter is to comprehend how vermicomposting works as a management strategy to reduce solid organic waste.
