This chapter of our exploration into the esports world focuses on defining the industry and understanding its market structure and size. This chapter aims to clarify the often misunderstood and interchanged terms related to esports, offering a comprehensive overview of the various layers and segments within the industry. Beginning with a detailed definition of esports, we distinguish between professional esports and other related activities, including amateur and grassroots levels. We define competitive gaming as an essential element, to which we will refer in the future, aiming to show significant growth opportunities. We also introduce the notion of E-Sports, which may help to solve the recognition dilemma.
