摘要

Surgical Site Infection (SSI) and Prosthetic Joint Infection (PJI) are catastrophic complications that may occur after a Total Joint Replacement (TJR) surgery. With an incidence of about 1–2% after primary Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA), 0.3–1.3 after primary Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) and even higher for revision procedures (5–6% for revision TKA and 3–4% for revision THA), postoperative infections pose a considerable burden on the healthcare systems around the globe. With current predictions calculating 635,000 THAs and 1.28 million TKAs being performed annually by 2030 just in the U.S.A, SSIs/PJIs jeopardize the well-being of millions of patients [1].
