Considerations for Arthroplasty in Secondary Arthritis: Sickle Cell Disease, Paget’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, Post-traumatic Arthritis, Previous Septic Arthritis, and Chronic Neurological Disorders

Patients undergoing hip or knee arthroplasty with secondary arthritis due to sickle cell disease, Paget’s disease, chronic neurological conditions, Parkinson’s disease, post-traumatic arthritis and previous septic arthritis undergoing hip or knee arthroplasty have unique needs during the peri-operative period. These patients have higher rates of medical and surgical complications, require longer hospitalization and have higher 30-day readmission rates. A multi-disciplinary team approach led by the orthopedic surgeon should be employed to optimize these patients in the pre-operative period. Despite optimization, these patients have inferior outcomes, higher revision, infection and early loosening rates compared to patients with osteoarthritis.
