On Verbal Irony Methods: Giving an Old Dog Some New Tricks

The chapter considers methodological issues in verbal irony research by first reassessing both definitional and breadth issues concerning the very notion of verbal irony. It then revisits several of the primary research questions driving most research on verbal irony. Each of these questions is approached in a slightly new way or is critiqued with an eye toward methodological enhancements (and challenges), to provide a range of commentary concerning, and potential directions forward for, verbal irony research.
