Hallucinogen use disorder (HUD) is a relatively rare substance use disorder characterized as a problematic pattern of hallucinogen use that leads to significant impairment and distress over 12 months. Hallucinogens encompass a wide-ranging group of compounds that vary in their biochemical structure and mechanism of action. They are classified together as they often reliably produce changes in a person’s mood, sensation, perception, and cognition. In alignment with the very low prevalence of HUD, there is a severe lack of research regarding medications or other treatments for HUD. There are currently no FDA-approved pharmacotherapies for HUD, and there is scant evidence for any specific medication to be beneficial in reducing the negative impacts of HUD. In terms of pharmacotherapies to treat HUD, there are several potential existing medications from diverse classes and wide-ranging mechanisms of action that are used to treat other substance use disorders, which may provide some benefit in the treatment of hallucinogen use disorder; however, this is speculative due to the scarcity of studies.
