Substance use disorders (SUDs) affect the family and family affects the individual with SUD. Family-based interventions in SUD treatment are empirically supported to enhance one’s long-term recovery, result in reduced substance use, and lead to improved family functioning. In this chapter, we will review the evidence base for family therapy modalities, fundamentals of family therapy interventions, and mechanisms to integrate family-based treatment into the continuum of SUD care.
