There are currently no FDA-approved therapies for anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) use disorder. The interventions that exist include prevention, side effect management, and harm reduction. Targeting school sports teams with interactive learning sessions about AAS could be useful in preventing AAS use in the younger generation. The pharmacotherapy options are targeted toward predominantly treating the androgenic side effects and include medications like human chorionic gonadotropin, selective estrogen receptor modulators, aromatase inhibitors, and phosphodiesterase inhibitors. Serotonergic antidepressants can be helpful for treating comorbid depression, anxiety, and muscle dysmorphic syndrome. In order to optimize the treatment of AAS use, physicians have to be knowledgeable about AAS and secure the trust of this patient population.
