Atomists and Femmes Savantes

As a reaction to the Renaissance, throughout the seventeenth century, mathematics replaced magic in interpreting natural phenomena, and mechanical philosophy gradually supplanted organicism. These changes paved the way for the dissemination of atomism, which had originated in Greece in the fifth century BC but had fallen into oblivion until it experienced a resurgence starting in the fifteenth century.
