Evolution of Reconstruction in Facial Paralysis

Facial paralysis impairs the aesthetics and function of the face. Facial movement is necessary for conveying emotion, socialization, ocular protection, oral competence, and the formation of certain words and sounds. There are a multitude of causes for facial paralysis, which need to be identified in order to discuss options for reconstruction. This chapter will discuss several breakthroughs that led to significant historical advances in the surgical management of the paralyzed face.
