Education Systems Efficiency and Social Networks

Interactions between resources and agents in education systems have effect on the system efficiency and quality. This chapter provides exploration of the counterproductive effects of a national regulation focused on budgeting schools based on the number of students enrolled, rather than on learning outcomes. The example shows that this can lead to decreased quality and integrity of the education processes and learning outcomes. With respect to the factors and their effects on the education system integrity and quality, social networks play an important role too. The use of social networks in education can have both pros and cons. They can increase student engagement by providing a platform for collaboration and discussion. Also, social networks can increase access to educational resources beyond the traditional classroom, enabling students to learn from a diverse range of sources. However, social networks can be a source of distraction, potentially reducing student focus and productivity. Social networks can be subject to bias and misinformation, which can influence student perceptions and attitudes. Also, they can raise concerns around student privacy and security and can be used as a platform for cyberbullying.
