Royce explains the history, form, and contents of the distinctive source material. The concordats of the Apostolic See are identified and discussed, with peculiar reference to the contracting parties and treaty terms that figure most prominently. A causal relationship is expounded whereby the dominance or inferiority of canon law within the contracting party is held primarily responsible for the manifestation of more ecclesiological or ideational treaty norms, respectively. Six concordatorial tendencies are identified and discussed, and the results located within the international theory of English realism.
