At the Intersection of Canon, Comparative, and International Law

Royce surveys the intersecting canon, comparative, and international legal cultures to which concordats belong, as well as the existing research literatures each has produced. The first part examines the relevant sacred canons that inform the concordatorial question before addressing the primarily French scholarship that arose from canon law. The second part expounds the comparative legal basis for the understanding of concordats as international treaties, and provides an overview of their most important and frequent contents. The final part considers the importance of concordats within the generally acknowledged international legal competence of the Apostolic See and Catholic Church as a whole.
