Per Åhlin: The Master of Swedish Animation

The main aim of this chapter is to introduce the animator, director, and artist Per Åhlin (1931–2023)—also known as Sweden’s Miyazaki—to an international audience. Thanks to his consistent output, characteristic style, and engaging stories, Åhlin’s work has become almost synonymous with Swedish animation and is still seen and loved by new generations of kids. Among his most beloved and admired films is the adventure tale Thundering Fatty (1974), which mixes live-action with animation in an innovative way, the socially critical Christopher’s Christmas Mission (1975), which has become an annual rock-steady television tradition in Sweden, and the poetic and eco-critical The Journey to Melonia (1989), which is usually regarded as Åhlin’s magnum opus, inspired by Shakespeare, Dickens, and Verne. In this chapter, a brief contextual framework of the pioneers of Swedish animation is presented, such as the first Swedish animator Victor Bergdahl. The text also touches upon the positive conditions for Swedish animation during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, when there was strong support from the Swedish Film Institute as well as Swedish public service television. Furthermore, the immense impact of Åhlin’s work on the Swedish animation industry as a whole is pointed out, with a presentation of examples of successful contemporary directors such as Linda Hambäck and Christian Ryltenius. In conclusion, there are some reflections regarding the current state of Swedish animation, emphasising the great need for long-term financial and artistic investment.
