Detecting Alpha Particles with a Geiger

Limitations and possibilities to detect alpha particles with a Geiger counter are here discussed. Energy loss and absorption of alpha particles in typical materials are commented, and a few possible measurements are proposed to demonstrate the effect of shielding the detector from low energy heavy particles and to estimate the range of such particles in the material.
