Muography with Geiger Counters

Cosmic muons are highly penetrating particles, which able to traverse a large amount of solid material. These may be used as probes of the interior of large objects, giving information on the traversed matter either by their absorption or by their scattering, especially from high-Z elements. Muography, i.e. the technique employing cosmic ray muons—instead of X-rays—to provide a radiography of the object under study, has made significant progress over the last decades. The basic principles of the absorption muography may even be investigated by the use of simple Geiger counters, as outlined in the present section.
