Estimating the Contribution to the Count Rate of a Geiger from the Soil

The background count rate of a Geiger counter is usually determined by the cosmic ray flux and by the environmental contribution, which partly originates from the soil, if the counter is placed close to the ground. The relevance of such contribution may be investigated to some extent by appropriate measurements with different shielding geometries. Some consideration and experimental measurements performed with a Geiger counter concerning this possibility are discussed in this Chapter.
