Shielding a Geiger Counter with Lead Blocks

Measurements of the background count rate registered by a Geiger counter under a shield provided by a few lead blocks are discussed and compared with the corresponding rate measured without any shield, to understand to which level the background originating from cosmic rays and environmental radioactivity may be reduced, especially in view of carrying out measurements on samples with a low activity.
