摘要

Despite the potential benefits of integrating technology into teaching and learning, many South African universities face ICT-related challenges that impede successful adoption. The implementation of e-learning within education continues to represent a noteworthy challenge supported by evidence, particularly within historically disadvantaged contexts. In the study reported in this chapter, the factors that influenced the successful integration of technology in teaching and learning were investigated at a South African university of technology, in an environment that is particularly challenged by limited information and communication technology infrastructure and resources that inhibited or enhanced lecturers’ implementation of e-learning. A quantitative design was used to facilitate data collection amongst lecturers (n = 97) who were selected using criterion sampling. Additional analysis of emergent themes was conducted on the qualitative responses offered by respondents. R Statistical computer software, 2020, Version 3.6.3, was used to analyse data in line with the research question. The study findings showed poor access to internet connectivity, lack of continuous training and unaccommodating technology infrastructure as possible factors that hinder or enhance the e-learning environment. These findings have the potential to influence policy and practice in the integration of technology in higher education in South Africa and other similar contexts. Based on the findings of the study, the provision of technology training and technology-enhanced infrastructure, including software and hardware, is recommends. To enable the integration and use of e-learning technologies by lecturers in their delivery of instruction, appropriate technologically-advanced classrooms and laboratories should also have dependable internet and computer connectivity.
