Numerical Simulation of a Fixed Oscillating Water Column Wave Energy Converter Device
摘要
Wave energy converters are devices designed to harness the energy from ocean waves and convert it into usable electricity. A prototype of the oscillating water column (OWC) device was developed since 1983 and showed unsuitable output for low to mild wave conditions. Thus, several studies have been conducted to increase the pneumatic performance of the OWC, particularly by improving their structural geometry and integration with breakwaters. Thus, the primary objectives of this study are to investigate the optimum slope angle for the back wall and to find out the performance of the proposed slope in Malaysia’s coastline. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method was used in this study. The design performance is analysed by using two indication variables, i.e., pressure and velocity. The pressure would accelerate the motion and increase the output energy. The contribution of this study is the investigation on the variation of slope angle that can match with Malaysia low wave conditions. Based on the numerical simulation, a design with 19° angle has a good performance at calm wave with 9.88 kJ/kg energy estimation. However, at high wave amplitude, a design with 10° angle has a better performance with 10.52 kJ /kg energy estimation. Please check and confirm if the authors and their respective affiliations have been correctly identified.
