Sea Trial Evaluation of Kapok-Sawdust as New Green Oil Adsorbent in Portable Oil Spill Collectors

摘要

In this project, a portable oil spill collector was developed using a combination of kapok and sawdust to be used as oil adsorbent filters. Both kapok and sawdust are water repellent and highly absorbent to oil owning to the hydrophobic and oleophilic character. Kapok was combined with sawdust according to 10:0, 7:3, 5:5, 3:7 and 0:10 ratio to evaluate their sorption performance in 30, 60 and 90 min. The portable oil spill collector was developed with a static filter system so that the adsorbent can absorb oil from water as the vessel moves. The optimum ratio for oil absorbent efficiency found for both laboratory and sea trial experimental recorded in kapok: sawdust samples with ratio of 7:3. As a conclusion, the samples with a ratio of 7:3 have a better oil absorption efficiency and stability during a longer period of immersion time, in various medium of environment and various filter positions.
