Utilizing Perimeter Design in Sandwich Plates for Ship Structures

Sandwich materials are the ship structure design innovations. This material arrangement is based on a core material which is split by two face sheets. Previous research analyzed the application of sandwich material on a tanker’s structure. A concern of the selection of a sandwich material is that they have the same strength but reduced weight. Sandwich materials have been widely used in the industrial world, but applications on ships require more detailed calculations. This paper aims to analyze the strength of the sandwich material to be applied to the deck structure. Applying sandwich material on Ro-Ro passenger ship decks is a prospect that can be applied by estimating weight reduction and considering an easy repair process. An analysis is carried out by comparing the existing conditions of the structure and application of the perimeter design benchmarks from rules, also own design. The selected ship is the Roro ship, and this location selection is based on Lloyd’s Provisional Rules recommendations. The results of the analyzes were compared with the strength assessment, and the weight loss estimates were presented.
