Thacchen: The Dwelling Body in the Rough House

In this essay and exploration through landscape, huts in transitory states of impermanence and ruin build an assemblage, thatching poetries and material from fossa terra to a concept of dwelling untethered from containment, shelter and form. I consider how release of structure and freed space elevates the trope of the hut as a liminal site of presencing by examining how dwelling is imbricated with fragmentation, knotting and Heidegger’s ideas on the boundary and what it means to spare. In the pathways, as huts give way, generant material passes through landscape and poetics in a woven register of human presencing and dwelling within the natural and more-than-human world. Notions of site and locality are examined and gain porosity through textual transitions, revealing the hut as a crossing ground that apprehends the wreckage of function and the impediment structure provides. As a maquette of unsettled margins, the hut negotiates erasure, fracture and absence, threading dislocation and inscription to poetics and to more fluid borders for an expansive concept of dwelling in and aside the land.
