Results and Efficacy of Total Ankle Arthroplasty

Total ankle arthroplasty treating ankle osteoarthritis has become a safe and reliable technique with encouraging outcomes. The current prosthetic designs were associated with better total ankle arthroplasty survival than in the past. This reflects better instrumentation, increased surgeon experience, better patient selection, and improved healthcare. Current evidence does not support using one prosthesis over another, nor one group of prostheses over another. It has been widely recognized that success in the long term depends primarily on to which extent the surgeon was able to balance the replaced ankle. Stratification of outcomes by ankle deformity or varying degrees of ankle osteoarthritis complexity, or for patients with comorbidities, such as diabetes, obesity, and peripheral vascular disease, may help identify those likely to have better outcomes or be predisposed to implant failure or other adverse events.
