As already noted, the term “muscle stimulation” is a misleading one in that the threshold for exciting motor nerves is significantly lower than that of the muscle in question. In WB-(N)EMS, the superficially applied impulse first stimulates the nerve which then causes muscle contraction via the alpha motoneurons and the motor end plates.
