The History of the Emergence and Development of Economic Education at St. Petersburg Polytechnic University

The article examines the history of the formation and development of the Polytechnic Institute (University) in St. Petersburg during the XX century. The choice of the topic of the article is justified by the need to determine the role and place of engineering and technical education throughout the existence of St. Petersburg Polytechnic University since its foundation. An important stage of any educational organization, and especially such a large one as an institute (university), is the initial stage, at which goals and objectives are set, management and teaching staff are selected. Therefore, the authors pay great attention to the characteristics of the teaching staff. One of the goals of founding the university was the need to train specialists with an engineering and economic education, which in Russia at the time of the decision on the formation of the institute was insufficient. Therefore, the article also provides historical facts of the formation of the economic and other departments of the Institute and provides biographies of significant economic scientists. A retrospective is shown from the moment of the institute’s foundation to the present day, the features of the development of economic education in different periods of its existence are characterized, significant scientific schools, scientific views and achievements of their founders are characterized.
