Spelling Error Detection and Correction for Arabic Using NooJ

This paper presents how we managed to implement a spell checker for Arabic, benefiting from the power of NooJ and using its functionality, noojapply. Firstly, we define and describe the types of spelling errors, and give an overview of the NooJ platform and its command-line tool, noojapply. Then, we present the four main steps of our spell checker prototype. Actually, we created a local grammar in NooJ for detecting errors, as well as a morphological and local grammar in NooJ for generating all possible candidates for corrections. Moreover, we implemented an improved algorithm to rank these candidates in decreasing order. Then, we created a web UI to illustrate our work. Finally, we present some tests and evaluations of our prototype, Al Mudaqiq.
