Anna Krien’s Into the Woods (2012) focuses on her eighteen months of research on Tasmania and Australian islands’ environmental conundrum posed by logging companies, the activism movement fighting against them, and a local community torn between the two. In her effort to understand this reality, Krien becomes involved with the activists, by hearing their stories, she talks with politicians, and she spends time with loggers and furniture makers. The book shows different but essential sides of this environmental issue. This essay considers the implications of a “journalist going into the woods,” figuratively and literally, in an attempt to explore the impact of Anna Krien’s work and how she portrayed nature, the human interactions with it, and the real-life outcome of these exchanges.
