Nature—or perhaps the way modern capitalism objectifies and destroys nature—is the topic of our time. Nature has been at the core of an extensive list of long-form journalistic narratives in the past century and has spun hundreds more in the past decade. This collection aspires to explore and understand the ways in which literary journalists have written and talked about nature, the environment, the agents that modify and disrupt it, and the ways in which humans have survived and may continue to do so as we enter a phase of extreme climate events. Its ambition is to find a thread, the connective tissue between different authors, with different styles and ideas, writing about the natural world from different places, perspectives, and times, but with a common goal: to understand the natural world humans are a part of. And to assess whether these efforts—our collective, intellectual attempts to explain nature through science, through journalism—have made a difference or not, and why.
