Applying Translation Theories in Musicological Research

This chapter is focused on applying translation theories to analytical practice in the case of musical arrangements, cover songs and performances, but also to the forms of intersemiotic translation involving music (transduction, ekphrasis) and multimodal forms of communication, in which music interacts with other semiotic systems. Rather than focusing on one historical period, composer, or musical genre, this analytical section involves some representative case studies, linking the concepts outlined in Chap. 2 to the musical phenomena described in Chap. 3 . The material has generally been arranged according to Kobus MaraisMarais Kobus’ concepts of intra-music, inter-music, and extra-music translation. Each of these types seems to entail the application of different research methodologies, yet, as was explained before, these types tend to overlap, especially intra- and inter-music translation.
