The Challenges of Introducing Massively Parallel Sequencing into the UK Forensic Market
摘要
The introduction of any new forensic science technique into the Criminal Justice System requires extensive validation and accreditation as well as compliance with the UK’s regulatory requirements. In May 2019 Cellmark Forensic Services, an established UK forensic science laboratory and accredited provider of forensic DNA testing services to the majority of police forces in England and Wales, initiated a project to introduce Massively Parallel Sequencing (MPS) into the UK forensic market. Almost two and a half years later, in September 2021, Cellmark became the first UK laboratory to achieve ISO17025 accreditation for MPS. This chapter describes the process involved and discusses the challenges faced, including a 12 month delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in making this next generation DNA profiling technology available to UK policing.
