Embracing Circular Economy in Australian Universities: Learning from Global Perspectives Using State-of-the-Art Review

This study explores the application of circular economy (CE) principles in Australian universities by drawing insights from global practices. Using a State-of-the-Art Review (SOTA) method, the study critically evaluates current knowledge, significant findings, and research gaps related to integrating CE principles within universities. The study focuses on five key areas: Waste Prevention and Resource Optimisation Strategies, Circular Infrastructure, Smarter Campuses, Local Partnerships, and CE Teaching and Research. The findings indicate that higher education institutions worldwide have embraced CE strategies to promote sustainability and enhance academic services. Waste prevention and resource optimisation strategies are being implemented in South African and UK universities, while circular infrastructure initiatives are evident in China and the UK. Smarter campuses are being developed in South Africa, China, Brazil, and the USA, incorporating 4IR technology and promoting new circular economy enterprises. Brazilian universities foster local partnerships to strengthen ties with local businesses and communities. CE teaching and research practices are emphasised in China, Brazil, the UK, and the USA through scholarly cooperation, curriculum development, and simulation games. Adopting CE principles in Australian universities can lead to environmental sustainability, student engagement, and community engagement. Integrating CE principles into curricula can equip future leaders with essential skills to address sustainability challenges. This study provides insights for Australian universities to adopt CE practices, contributing to the global transition towards a more sustainable higher education sector.
