Managing Construction Supply Chains: Application of the Agile Ways of Working

The construction industry is known for its complex supply chain management processes which often encounter change and uncertainties. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in adopting the agile ways of working to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of project delivery in various industries. This study aims to explore the application of agile mindset and agile ways of working in the supply chain management of the construction industry. Through extensive literature reviews of 41 relevant resources and semi-structured interviews with 5 industry professionals, the study identifies the key principles and practices of agile that could be applied in the construction supply chain. The literature review reveals that agile practices such as collaboration, iterative planning, and continuous improvement can enhance supply chain management in construction. Based on the insights, experience and perspectives shared by industry stakeholders, the adoption of agile mindsets and practices have positive impacts on supply chain management, including better communication, faster decision-making, and improved project outcomes. The findings suggest that the adoption of agile practices in construction supply chain management can improve efficiency and effectiveness, but successful adoption requires a shift in mindset, a willingness to embrace change and the involvement of agile coaches. The study provides valuable insights for future research and practice in the construction industry, particularly in managing uncertainties.
