Nonpharmacological Pain Treatment

  • Serge Marchand

摘要

This chapter explores the intricacies of non-pharmacological pain treatments, encompassing a broad spectrum from physical to psychological approaches. Within these pages, we explore techniques ranging from low-intensity to high-intensity Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), providing in-depth insights into their distinct neurophysiological mechanisms and their clinical applications. The extensive body of literature on the transformative power of physical exercise in enhancing the effectiveness of virtually all physiological mechanisms for pain control is a central focus. We underscore how physical activity serves as a catalyst, augmenting the body’s innate ability to alleviate pain. Furthermore, we delve into the art of relaxation and meditation, elucidating their profound physiological effects on pain management. By shedding light on these practices, we highlight their invaluable role in holistic pain treatment. Intriguingly, we explore the omnipresence of placebo and nocebo effects across various pain treatments. Emphasis is placed on harnessing the positive potential of the placebo effect, demonstrating how it can be wielded as a therapeutic tool. Lastly, we underscore the significance of patient education regarding the mechanisms underlying pain development and persistence. This critical component of pain treatment is explained in detail, highlighting its pivotal role in fostering informed and empowered patients on their journey towards pain relief.
