What Is Pain?

This first chapter gives an overview of the components covered in the following chapters. Each chapter is briefly presented to apprehend the organization of the book from basic neurophysiology to clinical applications. It introduces the comprehensive understanding of pain by elucidating its essential role in ensuring survival but can also be life threatening. The definition of pain and the terms used to describe different types of pain, from experimental models to clinical pain characteristics are developed in this chapter.
