摘要

This chapter addresses the multifaceted consequences of negative attitudes and vaccine hesitancy toward COVID-19, emphasising its impact on health, mental well-being, social relationships, and the economy. Building on our Chaps. 7 – 10 results, we examine the potential ramifications if positive attitudes toward vaccination are not restored. In assessing the effect of non-vaccination on health, we discuss the threat posed to achieving herd immunity, the increased risk of severe infections and fatalities among individuals and communities, and the global health security implications. Through a comprehensive review of studies and reports, including estimates of preventable deaths due to non-vaccination, we underscore the critical importance of widespread vaccination for mitigating the adverse health outcomes of the pandemic. Furthermore, we explore the relationship between non-vaccination and mental health, drawing insights from studies highlighting the psychological distress experienced by vaccine-hesitant individuals and their communities. From improved mental health outcomes among vaccinated populations to heightened anxiety and depressive symptoms among the vaccine-hesitant, our analysis underscores the significant impact of vaccination decisions on mental well-being. Turning to the effect of non-vaccination on social relationships, we highlight the divisive impact of vaccine hesitancy on interpersonal dynamics within families, communities, and social networks. Drawing from anecdotal evidence and media reports, we discuss how vaccine hesitancy increases trust deficits, deepens societal divides, and strains social cohesion, with implications extending beyond individual relationships to economic and political realms. Finally, we examine the economic consequences of vaccine hesitancy, explaining its role in impeding economic recovery, increasing healthcare costs, reducing consumer confidence, and disrupting sectors such as tourism and hospitality. By analysing various studies and economic indicators, we underscore the importance of widespread vaccine acceptance to bolster economic resilience and foster global prosperity
