AI-Based Automated Custom Cranial Implant Design – Challenges and Opportunities with Case Study

Every day thousands of people suffer from traffic accidents, warfare, and complications in surgeries leading to the need for personalized cranial implants. Unfortunately, the process of modeling and manufacturing a personalized cranial implants requires people experienced with manual implant modeling. That makes the process costly and time-consuming, often leading to waiting time of several months for the reconstruction surgery. Therefore, an automatic solution to the task is highly desired. In this work, we describe an overview of the DeepImplant system with a case study. First, the state-of-the-art, the overall goal, and the related challenges are discussed. Then, the article presents the system architecture and desired functionalities: (i) the reconstruction module, (ii) the visualization module, (iii) the plugin module. The work focuses on the technical design of the developed software and the modular design. It is important aspect required for an efficient manufacturing of personalized implants.
