The Effect of Inverter and Non-inverter Air-Conditioning, Air Movement, CO2 Concentration and Aircon Set Temperature on Sleep Wellness

Thermal environment, air movement, and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration are important factors that can affect human sleep. The effect of heat or cold exposure is linked to an increase in wakefulness and a decrease in deep sleep. The effects of the thermal environment on sleep stages are strongly linked to thermoregulation, which affects the mechanism of affecting sleep. In the present paper, we investigate the air temperature and humidity measured in a bedroom and the effect of inverter and non-inverter air-conditioning on sleep quality. We also investigate the effect of aircon set temperature, air movement, and CO2 concentration on sleep quality. Twelve healthy participants (six males and six females) were recruited for this study. The results reveal deep sleep percentage improves in inverter air-conditioning compared to non-inverter air-conditioning by 17.8% (P < 0.05), ceiling fan control ON compared to ceiling fan turn OFF by 26.3% (P < 0.05), aircon set temperature of 26 ℃ compared to 24 ℃ by 19.5% (P < 0.05) and low CO2 level environment to high CO2 by 42% (P < 0.05).
