A Communication Assistive Glasses for Hearing Impaired Users

Communication is a fundamental right of all people to be able to express one’s opinion and expression without distinction of language. People suffering hearing loss however are having their rights suppressed indirectly as society is insensitive and ignorant to alternate methods of verbal communication, resulting in an increased lifetime prevalence of depression and reported consistently higher rates of anxiety In this project, we propose a set of cost effective, compact and portable device that converts verbal communication and manual communication into text format which can be easily perceived by all parties to facilitate better communication with people that suffered hearing loss. Results of the prototype indicated that while all functions were able to be carried out, two main limitations prevented this prototype from fully achieving its objective. These limitations are the relatively large size of the final prototype and the insufficient processing power and incompatibilities faced when attempting to perform gesture-to-text processing. Nonetheless, the main functions were still successfully carried out.
