The Effects of Bowling Ball Drilling Angle in Tenpin Bowling; A Preliminary Study

Tenpin bowling is a sport that requires a bowler to hit the ten pins placed at the end of 60 ft long bowling lane by rolling down a bowling ball. A bowling ball is first mapped with specific lines and later drilled with three (3) holes on it. The bowling ball is also manufactured with various cores and weight blocks that influence how it acts on the lane. However, it is still vague how the ball mapping and different weight blocks may affect the pinfalls among recreational bowlers. This study was conducted to investigate the differences between 3 types of mapping on the selected bowling ball with the same weight (14 lb) but different cores and brands (C14 - symmetrical and E14 - asymmetrical) that influence the bowling ball entry (pocket entry board position - PEBP) and contact with pin and that cause the pinfalls. Hand anthropometry and dual angle layout technique (DAL) were used to map the bowling ball before the virtual drillings assessment. As result, both cores showed significance on all parameters of drilling on PEBP. These results may use as a reference for a beginner bowler in the future for bowling ball mapping.
