Vectors provide a natural mathematical language for describing force and motion. This chapter introduces vector analysis to establish the notation used throughout the book and to acquaint the reader with basic vector operations. We begin here because so much of the subsequent development depends not just on understanding what a vector is but with developing fluency in the use of vectors to solve mechanics problems. Throughout the book we use direct vector notation because it provides the most compact derivations and the most geometric insight about force and motion.
