Finite Elements for the Prototype One-Dimensional BVP

In this chapter we introduce the concept of finite elements and their associated basis functions \(\phi _i\) . Instead of using functions \(\phi _i\) that span the entire domain as before, we will now choose new localized, or compact, \(\phi _i\) s that are nonzero only within a small neighborhood of designated points of interest.
