Introduction

In this section we give a list of concrete, classical, and prominent problems that have been (partially) solved by surgery theory. The list shall illustrate the high potential of surgery theory and the (partial) solutions of these problems will constitute the contents of this book. The following two problems represent the prototype of surgery problems, which, however, cannot be solved in full generality.
