Returning to Treurenberg Bay, Releasing the Herzog Ernst from the Ice, and Rescuing the Lerner Expedition

On July 19, 1913, having been unsuccessful in their long-lasting and repeated attempts to cross the ice-blocked Hinlopen Strait in order to search Northeast Land for the missing Schröder-Stranz expeditioners, the Arve Staxrud rescue expedition’s men and dogs returned to Treurenberg Bay in order to free the German expedition’s frozen ship Herzog Ernst from the ice (Staxrud, 1914 52; Nøis, 1929, 11; Hilmar Nøis Diary SVB). It was time to go back to the ship, reported Staxrud, and, according to Hilmar Nøis, it was imperative to free and re-float the vessel while still in the height of summer, as presumably this would be the best time to literally break the ice. And so, as Daniel Nøis reports, the Staxrud expeditioners sailed back from Hinlopen Strait to the ship at Treurenberg Bay.
